Troubleshooting
In the Beginning contains the simplest ways we've found to make clothes. There are, of course, lots of other sewing methods that we simply didn't have room to include in the pattern package.
When you see a purple asterisk in your instruction book we have included, on the website, alternative methods that may better suit your skill level or available equipment.
So... any questions about sewing instructions, email us and we can post answers right here!

For Asha, Tash & Maz
HEM TOP EDGE
Page 17 Instruction No: 2
Beginners may have trouble stitching a hem on the top edge of the Asha top and Tash dress as it is a curved edge and tiny tucks will be needed.
Alternative Method: Cut front pattern piece exactly the same shape as the back. (Straight across). Hemming a straight edge is very easy.
(Please note: Eliminating the front shaped extension may make the front a little shorter than the back)

SHIRRING
Page 17 Instruction No: 3
Some newer model sewing machines with automatic tension adjustment have trouble shirring with elastic in the bobbin as fabric does not gather sufficiently.
Alternative Method: Use regular thread in bobbin.
On the WRONG side of garment, lay the shirring elastic parallel to edge and zigzag over the top of the elastic.
This is the same method used to "Gather ruffle" on Page 19 Instruction nos. 10 and 11.
The only difference is shirring elastic is stretched as you stitch, causing fabric to gather.

GATHER RUFFLE

Alternative Method 1:
If you don't have shirring elastic handy, you can zigzag over dental floss or fishing line (very easy to draw up gathers.)
Alternative Method 2:
If you don't have shirring elastic, dental floss or fishing line handy, try traditional gathering method.
Stitch 2 parallel rows of machine basting, and draw up the bobbin threads.
